A renters policy includes

The building is theirs. What’s inside is yours.

Renters insurance helps pay for three things that are yours: your belongings, your liability, and a place to stay if a covered loss makes your rental unlivable.

A quick example

A kitchen fire in the unit next door fills your apartment with smoke. Your renters policy is what can help clean or replace your smoke-damaged clothes, couch and laptop, and help pay for a hotel while the place is fixed, depending on its terms, limits and exclusions.

What it covers

What does renters insurance cover?

Renters insurance has three basic parts, per the Insurance Information Institute (iii.org): your belongings, your liability and additional living expenses after a covered loss. What each pays depends on your policy’s terms, limits and exclusions.

Which policy to check

Your landlord’s policy vs. your renters policy.

A general guide. What a policy pays for a loss depends on its terms, limits and exclusions. Your lease and your policy documents have the exact terms.

A minor issue came up on my home policy review, Barb got on it, reminded me (a couple of times) and got it successfully resolved. The definition of customer service.

Questions

Renters insurance questions, answered.

Is renters insurance required in Arizona?

Check your lease: a landlord or property manager may require it as a lease term. Not sure what yours says? Email us the insurance section and we’ll tell you what it asks for.

I don’t own much. Do I still need it?

If a guest is hurt in your place, or a leak you caused damages the unit below, you could be responsible for the cost no matter how little you own. The liability part of a renters policy is written for that, up to your limits.

How much renters coverage do I need?

Start with what it would cost to replace everything you own at today’s prices: bed, couch, clothes, phone, laptop, kitchen. We’ll walk through it with you room by room, so the limit is based on what you own, not a guess.

My landlord needs proof of insurance. Can you help?

Yes. A lease may ask for a minimum liability amount, and for the landlord or property manager to be listed on your policy. Tell us what yours asks for. We’ll quote coverage for those terms and help you send proof to your landlord.

Can you look at my renters and car insurance together?

Yes. If you also drive, we review both with you: one agent and one conversation for your car and the place you rent. See auto insurance for what we look at on the car side.

When should I get a renters quote?

Before you move in. Start the quote form and tell us your move-in date when we call, and we’ll quote your renters policy ahead of it, so you can choose a start date that matches your move-in and have proof ready for your landlord.
